Furnace Installation

With the cold winters in and around Jackson, Michigan, it is important to have a heating system that you can depend on to keep your home comfortable, even on the most bitter days. If your furnace is starting to become less and less reliable or costing you a fortune in gas and electricity, it may be time to consider an upgrade. Sometimes, the cost of repairing an older furnace outweighs the cost of replacing the system completely. It can also be more beneficial to replace an old, energy-wasting furnace with one that is more efficient. Replacing your outdated, failing furnace can save you significant amounts of money on energy bills. Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning is here to help with all of your furnace replacement needs!

Radiant Heating Services

Radiant heating is a great alternative to other heat sources, depending on where you live. Radiant heating systems supply heat directly to the floor or to panels in the wall or ceiling of a house. The systems depend largely on radiant heat transfer — the delivery of heat directly from the hot surface to the people and objects in the room via infrared radiation. Radiant heating is the effect you feel from the warmth of a hot stovetop element from across the room. When radiant heating is located in the floor, it is often called radiant floor heating or simply floor heating. The experts at Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning are here to help with all of your radiant heating needs!

Residential Heating Tips

Home heating systems are essential for maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures, especially during colder months. They come in various types, including furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and electric heaters, catering to different preferences and home layouts. Furnaces and boilers distribute heat through ductwork or radiators, while heat pumps extract heat from the air or ground and transfer it indoors. Electric heaters provide localized heating and are ideal for smaller spaces. Modern heating systems prioritize energy efficiency, utilizing advanced technologies like variable-speed motors and programmable thermostats to optimize performance and reduce energy consumption. Proper maintenance and timely repairs ensure efficient operation and prolong the lifespan of these systems, contributing to a warm and cozy home environment.

A furnace works by warming air using a heat exchanger and then distributing it throughout a home via ductwork. The process begins when the thermostat detects that the indoor temperature is lower than the desired setting and signals the furnace to turn on. The furnace then goes through a series of steps, including:
  1.  The inducer motor starts running.
  2.  The burners ignite and burn natural gas or propane.
  3.  The combustion chamber, also known as the burner, generates heat by combining air with a combustible material and an ignition source.
  4.  The burner flames heat a metal heat exchanger, which is usually made of thin metal sheets or hollow metal tubing. The heat exchanger warms incoming cold air from the home’s ductwork as it passes over its surface.
  5.  Exhaust gases, including carbon monoxide, flow out of the flue and are vented outside.
  6.  The furnace’s blower forces the heated air into the ductwork and distributes it throughout the home.
  7.  Cold air from the home is drawn into the furnace through the return ducts, and the process repeats until the home is warmed to the desired temperature. At that point, the furnace stops producing heat and the fuel switches off.

Uneven heating in your home can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor insulation, blocked vents, or issues with your heating system.

If your ductwork is not properly sealed or has leaks, warm air may not be reaching certain areas of your home. Additionally, if the ducts are too small or not well-maintained, airflow can be restricted. Another common cause of uneven heating is a thermostat that’s located in an area that doesn’t reflect the temperature in other rooms, like near a window or in a drafty area. A clogged air filter can also restrict airflow, causing some rooms to be warmer than others.

Finally, certain rooms may have more exposure to the outside elements, making them harder to heat. A professional HVAC technician can perform an inspection to identify the root cause and recommend solutions.

Heating F.A.Q.

Frequently Asked Questions

Homeowners in Jackson County & the surrounding areas have several solid options for home heating. Gas furnaces are the most common choice in Michigan, delivering powerful heat efficiently through a forced-air duct system. High-efficiency condensing furnaces reach AFUE ratings of 95% or higher, making them well-suited for Michigan’s long heating season.

Boilers heat homes through hot water or steam distributed to radiators or in-floor radiant systems and are common in older Michigan homes. Heat pumps, particularly cold-climate models, provide both heating and cooling in a single system and have become increasingly popular for their efficiency.

Ductless mini-split heat pumps are a great option for homes without existing ductwork or for room additions. Radiant floor heating delivers gentle, even warmth directly through the floor and is particularly comfortable in colder climates.

Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning can help you evaluate which system type makes the most sense for your home, budget, and situation.

A well-maintained gas furnace typically lasts 15 to 20 years. Electric furnaces tend to last a bit longer, often 20 to 25 years, since they have fewer combustion-related components that wear out. The actual lifespan depends heavily on how consistently the system has been serviced, the quality of the original installation, and how hard the system has had to work.

Michigan homes that run the heat from October through April put more annual hours on their furnaces than homes in milder climates, which is all the more reason to stay on top of annual maintenance. A furnace approaching 15 years that has been needing more frequent repairs or causing rising energy bills is a good candidate for evaluation and potential replacement.

Uneven heating throughout a home is a common complaint and usually comes down to one of a few root causes. Leaky or poorly sealed ductwork is one of the most frequent culprits, with studies showing the average home loses 20 to 30% of conditioned air through duct leaks before it reaches living spaces. Undersized or improperly balanced ductwork can mean some rooms receive plenty of airflow while others barely get any. Closed or blocked supply and return vents disrupt the system’s pressure balance and create hot and cold spots. A clogged air filter restricting overall airflow is another common factor.

Older homes with poor insulation, especially around exterior walls, windows, and attic spaces, can also create rooms that are significantly harder to heat than the rest of the house. Aspen One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning can inspect your system and ductwork to identify the root cause and recommend the most effective solution.

If your furnace is not turning on, start with a few quick checks before calling for service.

Make sure the thermostat is set to heat with the temperature set higher than the current room temperature. Check that the furnace power switch on the unit or nearby wall is in the on position. Inspect the circuit breaker panel to see if the furnace breaker has tripped. Check the air filter since a severely clogged filter can cause the system to shut down on the high-limit safety switch. If the furnace has a condensate drain, make sure it is not blocked since many high-efficiency furnaces will shut off if the drain line is clogged.

If none of those checks resolve it, the likely culprits are a failed igniter, a dirty flame sensor, a faulty gas valve, or a control board issue, all of which require a licensed technician.

A heating system blowing cold or lukewarm air is one of the most frustrating problems in a Michigan winter and has several possible causes.

For a gas furnace, the most common culprits are a failed igniter not lighting the burner, a dirty flame sensor shutting the burner off after a few seconds of operation, a clogged filter overheating the heat exchanger and tripping the limit switch, or a thermostat set to “fan on” instead of “auto” which runs the blower continuously even between heating cycles.

For heat pumps, blowing cool air in heating mode often points to a refrigerant issue, a reversing valve problem, or the system being in defrost mode temporarily. Checking the thermostat settings and the air filter are good first steps, and if those don’t resolve it, calling a technician for a diagnosis is the right move.
